Runner Beans Update

Time to update on the runner beans.  And have to admit I’m over the moon!  All almost at the top of the wigwams, lots of lovely red and the odd white flowers and yesterday I even spotted the first tiny beans.  Brave little things have coped with the lumpy clay, survived howling gales, torrential rain and 3 days of absolute blistering heat (yes, summer did appear briefly last week!).   I have fertilised, watered religiously when necessary, carefully wrapped stems around bamboo canes and followed Mrs. Charcott Monty Don’s instructions on pinching out the tops.   Have also so far managed to keep weeds and convolvulous reasonably under control.  Thankfully snails and slugs have kept their distance and amazingly the wigwams have stayed put with only one minor collapse in the very early days – thankfully sorted out by DS.

Now waiting eagerly for the first pickings – I thought this would be at the end of August but actually think it might be only a week to ten days away.  Here’s hoping!
